White papers can be a very effective in communicating the latest science and market research. In our experience, the most effective white papers are designed and written with the following guidelines:

1.  The paper should contain the most recent science, offer a solution to an industry challenge and/or provide an accurate assessment of a problem and the solution. Readers are looking for actionable information rather than an overt sales pitch. Think education not sales in your white paper language. Readers like detailed information that is aimed at problem solving not marketing hype.

2.  Though they are called white papers, text only papers will lose reader attention. Include graphics, visual aids, power points and charts to support your message.

3.  Science please. If you are submitting a white paper that is science-based (as opposed to a paper about general business practices), back it up with current, relevant and preferably peer-reviewed science.

4.  As a part of Functional Ingredients ongoing mission to support quality science, we can only accept scientific white papers that follow the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act guidelines for structure function claims and FDA’s guidelines for qualified health claims. 5.  Keep it short. Though digital technology has ample space to store information, short to moderate length is best, otherwise you will lose reader’s limited attention span. Five to ten pages in the main body is preferred and in a pdf format please.

2009 US Nutrition Industry Overview issue

Dietary-supplement sales grew from 5.8 per cent 6.3 per cent in 2008, shattering the prediction by some that consumers' falling disposable income would drown dietary-supplement sales. Overall, there were $102 billion in nutrition-industry consumer sales last year, the magazine reports. Growth slowed in categories other than dietary supplements, but remained positive nonetheless.
