Barnes shooting during a World Cup event earlier this season in a photo taken from her blog.Lanny Barnes, of Durango, Colorado, had what she called "an off day" during Saturday's Olympic biathlon 7.5km sprint race, finishing 78th out of 89 starters. Barnes drew a late starting slot, which worked to her disadvantage when early snow turned to rain, slowing the course significantly for the later starters.

"I did fight hard despite not feeling 100 per cent and am going to really going for it in the race on Thursday," Barnes said in her blog, in which she is chronicling her experience at the Winter Games.

Thursday's 15km individual race plays more to her strengths, Barnes said. "The race on Thursday is my favorite race and my best event. It is considered a shooters' race because with each miss, you get a minute added to your overall time. You can't make up that time in skiing, so it pays to hit your targets," she said in her blog.

Barnes is sponsored in part by elete.com, a manufacturer of a powdered electrolyte-replacement supplement to be added to drinks.
