Del Bosco biffs it in finals

February 22, 2010

Canadian ski-crosser Chris Del Bosco isn't the type to settle for third place.

With the bronze medal all but assured and the finish line in sight, Del Bosco decided his only chance for the gold was to take a high-risk inside angle on the penultimate jump to slip in front of the leaders.

"I had the bronze sewed up but I didn't want the bronze, I wanted the gold," he said, so he went for it on that big second-to-last jump — and flew cock-eyed off the jump, falling hard. The dramatic wipe-out was captured on his helmet-cam, making it one of the more notable moments of the 21st winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Del Bosco was raised in Vail, Colorado, but his father was born in Canada and he has dual citizenship.

One of the Canadian ski cross' sponsors is Cold-FX — the official cold and flu remedy of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The product, marketed by Edmonton-based Afexa Life Sciences, is based on a unique extract from the ginseng root.
