What men want
The males of our species are notoriously competitive, and that means anything to enhance sexual performance (and its cousin, sports performance — see page 66) is worthwhile.
And nothing says "sex" quite like the botanical named horny goat weed.
"In China this is known more accurately as Yin Yang Huo or licentious or "frisky" goat, implying a goat with a great libido," says Brien Quirk, director of R&D at Draco Natural Products. "It was noticed by goat herders that the goats eating the fresh epimedium herb growing in the countryside would be more frequently observed engaging in copulation. Interestingly, research has shown that epimedium contains a compound, icariin, that increases nitric oxide — the same pathway for how Viagara and other erectile dysfunction drugs work."
But that's hardly the end of the story with herbal-based sex enhancers. Among them, maca has been shown to enhance libido and sexual function. LycoRed's LycoMato Powder has been self-affirmed GRAS for use in functional foods. The powder contains lycopene plus other beneficial tomato phytonutrients, including other carotenoids and tocopherols. These antioxidants, acting in synergy with lycopene, help support prostate health — and also the cardiovascular system and prevent DNA damage, the Israeli company reports. The powder can also act as a natural red colourant in foods. And selenium, not to be outdone, boasts a qualified health claim for its prostate cancer-preventive actions. Turns out this mineral could be best of all for this condition.
For sperm health, ingredients as diverse as carnitine and Pycnogenol have been shown to improve mobility and motility of sperm.
